IAP2 Curriculum FAQ

  • “Fundamentals of Public Participation and Engagement” or the “IAP2 Way in Challenging Contexts” are both acceptable entry prerequisites into the IAP2 Global Learning Pathway, which is a series of training courses that lead to the Certificate in P2. See the Learning Pathway graphics at the bottom of this page.

  • IAP2 has developed a number of new courses (over 14 in all) and overall the program will be called the "Global Learning Pathway" but for the moment, IAP2 Canada has ONLY launched the first set of courses that make up the Certificate in P2. These are the courses that replace the Foundations program that you have completed. The other courses are coming but we don't currently have a timeline on when they will be available in Canada.

However - in order to take any of the courses in the Global Learning Pathway you need to complete a prerequisite - because you have taken the former Planning and Techniques you will ONLY need to watch this Transition video and when the other courses become available you will be ready to go. There is NO COST to complete the transition video.

If a video isn't up your alley or you prefer a more interactive learning experience - I'd suggest taking one of the pre-requisite courses - Fundamentals of P2 & Engagement or the IAP2 Way in Challenging Context. Both are 1 day courses and will provide you a great refresher but also an opportunity to explore the new content. There are 2 new foundations (Equity-centered and Relationship Focused) as well as a whole slew of tools that I think are excellent additions to the Foundations material. Visit our Individual Courses page to register for the 2023 dates.

  • After completing Fundamentals of P2/Engagement OR the IAP2 Way in Challenging Contexts, we suggest you take Designing P2 and Engagement followed by Applying Methods. Upon completion of all 3 courses you will receive your Certificate in Public Participation.

  • The prerequisite courses provide practitioners with the globally accepted foundations, concepts, and principles of authentic engagement – setting the stage for follow-up training in engagement planning and methods. This six-hour (2 x three-hour sessions) course is also appropriate for senior managers and elected officials seeking to understand the benefits, risks, limitations, and opportunities to engagement, in support of decision making.

  • While both courses are pre-requisites to Designing P2 and Engagement followed by Applying Methods, they are delivered slightly differently.

Fundamentals is a level 1 course for new practitioners beginning their journey in P2/engagement .

The IAP2 Way in Challenging Contexts is a level 1/2 course that delivers similar content but is tailored to practitioners with more years of experience.

  • Taking the best of stakeholder and engagement training from around the globe, a new suite of courses was developed to create the new certificate program. The Fundamentals of P2/Engagement course provides participants with an understanding of the practices, models and framework of meaningful and effective P2/ engagement and what participants need to know to do this well. The training explores best practices, and how to design and apply this knowledge to your P2/engagement work.

Starting with IAP2 Way in Challenging Contexts as the foundational and prerequisite module. Add both Designing P2/Engagement and Applying Methods, to complete your Certificate in Public Participation.
